How to Vape Weed

Can you vape weed?

Some of the first vaporizers were actually developed for cannabis. They originated with desktop vaporizers and evolved into more portable vape devices. Using a dry herb vape requires a bit of learning, just as rolling a joint does, but this guide will get you started in the right direction. Whether your vaping mission is weed or CBD hemp bud, you’re going to want to follow these same guidelines.

If you already own a regular vape pen, unfortunately you can’t just put weed into it. That’s simply not how vape pens work. The good news is that there are dry herb atomizers and tanks and dry herb vape pens. They generally aren’t as effective as the standalone units, but they are an affordable way to enjoy your herb without a lighter.

In this guide we will be focusing specifically on vaporizers for dry herb but today there are many other alternatives for vaping herbal concentrates like weed pens, wax pens and electric dab rigs that are more convenient, efficient and produce less odor.

How to vape weed: what you’ll need

Here is everything you will need to get started. Whether you’re using a portable or desktop vaporizer, it may require a few additional accessories that will come in handy.

  • Dry herb – First you need some good quality dry herb; you can buy high CBD cannabis online if you aren’t in a recreational or medical marijuana state. The bud shouldn’t be too sticky or dry, or it will not vape properly.
  • Vaporizer – The most common options are portable or desktop vaporizers. They are standalone units designed specifically for this purpose and are going to be your best option.
  • Grinder – They are a necessity for conduction vapes, and ideal for most convection vapes. A grinder is always an excellent tool to have in your arsenal.
  • Accessories – Many vaporizers include tools for cleaning your vaporizer, usually a brush and a stir tool. Other essential items include cotton swabs, pipe cleaners and high-strength isopropyl alcohol.

How to use a tabletop vape

How to Vape Weed

Tabletop vaporizers are stationary temperature control units made to sit on a desktop or other stable surface. Tabletop vaporizers come in many varieties, but all include a heating chamber, heating element, a mouthpiece, and temperature control. Here’s how to vape cannabis using a tabletop vape:

  1. Start by reading the manual. While you may eagerly await your first vape hit, understanding the specific steps to operate your tabletop vape is crucial to enjoying your cannabis and ensuring the longevity of your device.
  2. Plug in your vape and turn it on. Allow your device to heat up in preparation for use.
  3. While your vape is heating, grind your cannabis flower thoroughly and load it inside the heating chamber, sometimes called oven. This chamber is where flowers are heated to produce vapor for inhalation. The size, shape, and location of the vape’s heating chamber vary based on each unit — most devices fit around a ¼-½ gram of ground cannabis. Make sure you don’t overpack your chamber to ensure proper airflow. Seal the oven securely.
  4. If your device permits, set your desired temperature. Ideal vaping temperatures are between 350-to-400 degrees Fahrenheit.
  5. Inhale from the mouthpiece to take a hit. You’ll know it’s working when you see and taste the cannabis vapor on each exhale. Long, slow inhales are the way to go.
  6. As you continue to use your vape, the amount of cannabinoids in the cannabis will gradually decrease, turning flowers from green to brown. Tabletop vapes, however, won’t combust the flower material the same way smoking does. You’ll know it’s time to reload the chamber when the vapor thins and loses its flavor.
  7. When finished, discard the leftover cannabis material. Make sure to clean your vape regularly, after every 10-to-20 sessions, to keep it in prime working condition. Check your vape manual for cleaning instructions.
  8. Optionally, you can perform a burnoff session after you vape to burn away any leftover cannabis material. Crank the empty vape to its highest temperature and allow it to sit for five-to-ten minutes. This should clear away any residual plant matter.

What is a vape pen?

A vape pen is a power source that heats up a vape tank or cartridge to produce vapor. They’re rechargeable battery-powered devices that are pocket-sized and cylindrical – hence, the name “pen.” Vape pens first hit the e-cigarette scene around 2010 from a company called Janty, then shortly after were popularized by Joyetech.

This device revolutionized the vaporizer market by offering larger battery capacity and longer running times, as well as providing the user with the ability to swap atomizers or cartridges. Prior to vape pens, e-cigarettes were small self-contained units in the shape and size of a cigarette.

Rechargeable and disposable vape pens

Vape pens come in two main categories: rechargeable and disposable. A rechargeable vape pen generally refers to a battery-powered device used for vaping with a variety of atomizers and cartridges.

A disposable vape pen is an all-in-one unit comprised of an internal battery, a pre-filled tank and a coil. They are neither rechargeable or refillable, and can be disposed when depleted. Disposable and rechargeable vape pens come in into two main varieties: push-button and draw-activated.

Push-button vs. draw-activated vape pens

  • Draw-activated vape pens: As the name suggests, these pens are activated when you puff on them. They don’t require you to turn them on or off, and have no buttons to push. They are the easiest type of vape pens to use, but offer less options in terms of functionality when compared to button-activated vape pens.
  • Push-button vape pens: These vape pens need to be turned on before use. This is typically done by pressing the button five times in a row. Some push-button vape pens allow you to adjust the voltage output. This is usually done by pressing the button three times in a row. Other vape pens have pre-heat mode which can be activated by pressing the button twice.

Why is my vape pen not working?

Here are some of the most common answers to why our vape pen might not be working.

  • Push-button vape pen not on: Click the button five times and try again. Make sure you are holding the button while hitting it or it will not work.
  • Cartridge not connected properly: The cartridge might be too loose and is not making a proper connection to the device.
  • Incompatible cartridge: Unfortunately, some cartridges are not compatible with all vape pens despite being 510-threaded.
  • Defective coil or battery: Sometimes cartridges can come with a defective coil that will not fire. Try it on another battery and if it works, then your vape pen battery might be defective.
  • Cartridge is depleted: Once your cartridge is empty it isn’t going to produce vapor, re-fill or replace it.
  • Vape pen not charged: Plug it into the charger. Some vape pens have micro-USB or even USB-C charging ports, or the standard 510-threaded USB charger.
